I’m all about flowers, so this post will focus on what flowering plants to grow this time of year for a beautiful and colorful fall garden. Are you ready for some fall fun in the garden? Here are 10 plants to grow for a fall garden.
Some of these may or may not grow well in your area. Get to know what gardening zone you live in. If you are not sure, contact a local gardening center to get to know what plants grow well in your area.

Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums and pumpkins go hand in hand. These classic fall flowers are probably what comes to mind when you think about what to plant in your fall garden. Add some mums to containers to add a pop of color to your porch or borders.
Alyssum

Alyssum grow tiny purple and white flowers that are great for ground cover or to use in containers to spill out. Combine with celosia for a diverse look in a container. These great smelling flowers can bloom all fall and winter in milder climates.

Celosia
Celosia are great flowering fall plants for a fall garden because they come in all kinds of fall colors like red, yellow, and orange. Place celosia plants in the middle of a container with spillers for an interesting variety and dimension.
Helenium

Heleniums, also called Sneezeweed, are great to add to a fall garden because of their daisy like blooms with orange petals, the perfect fall color. They also bloom in yellow and red. Heleniums thrive best in full sun.
Pansy
Little pansies come in a variety of colors, including fall colors like red and yellow. These also grow great in containers or borders to add color to your yard. Combine these with other flowers for a burst of color this time of year.
Sedum

The bright pink blooms of sedums are great to add to attract butterflies. These plants are great to have in mild and dry climates, since they don’t need much water to survive.
Black Eyed Susan
Black eyed susans are great to add to your fall garden with their striking bright yellow petals with dark brown centers. You can combine these with asters and mums for a colorful fall container. Butterflies and bees will also be attracted to this colorful blooms of black eyed susans.
Japanese Anemone

These poppy like flowers are great along borders and in containers. These start to bloom in the summer and continue to bloom in the fall, counting on how cold it gets in your area. These flowers can sow themselves for you to enjoy for years to come.
Marigolds
Marigolds are another great flower to add to your fall garden. Grow these orange blooming flowers alone or mix up with other fall favorites. Marigolds grow great in containers to add a little color to a specific area of your garden.
Aster
Asters are colorful daisy like flowers that grow other times of the year, based on where you live. These fall flowers come in pink, purple, blue and white. If you enjoy other colors this time of year, these flowers are for you!

I’ve been living in the tropics for the past 20 years… but this brought me a lot of nostalgia, especially remembering planting pansies with mum in Autumn!

This is a great guide to plants to grow in the fall. I have yet to try to grow a fall garden. I would love to, but our fall is so short that I’m not sure it’s worth it. I do grow some of these flowers during the summers since our summers are fairly cool.

Here in Southern California, we are lucky to be able to grow plants throughout the year. It will get cooler and shadier, but I can still grow plants in the fall!
